AMID HISTORY, ART AND ARCHITECTURE INSIDE THE WALLS OF SARZANA HISTORICAL CENTRE

THE BED & BREAKFAST

The B&B “Dentro le Mura” lies in the heart of Sarzana historical centre, immediately beyond the access to Porta Parma, linking the Genoese Tower or St. George’s Tower to Tower “Stella”, north of the historical hamlet of Sarzana.

The building, recently and finely renovated, with exposed stone walls and an independent access, offers a satisfying and exhaustive stay to all visitors. The B&B is set inside a stone made historical building in Bertoloni Street, a typical pedestrian street in the centre, which is rich in shops, bars and restaurant.

The strategic central position of the Bed & Breakfast “Dentro le Mura”, just a few meters away from Matteotti Square, differentiates it from other local accommodations, meeting the needs of holidaymakers and commuters. Infact “Dentro le Mura” is only 150 m. away from Porta Parma’s parking lot and it’s very close to Sarzana train station too as well as to all the services and facilities that a modern centre like the one in Sarzana contemplates.

The windows of the B&B overlook Bortoloni Street, a typical pedestrian street renowned for its art, delicatessen and clothes shops. This street, which is an extension of “Via Mazzini”, leads you from “Porta Parma” to the beautiful Matteotti Square.

SARZANA

Sarzana is a pretty town set inside the Magra valley on the border between Liguria and Toscana.

It was born around the year one thousand following the destruction of Luni’s commercial harbour, which signed the decline of this ancient Roman settlement.

Sarzana crosses what once was the ancient path of the pilgrim’s route, the Via Francigena, which used to lead medieval pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela. Sarzana’s history is affected by the natural elements that surround it: “the Apuane Alps” rise behind the town itself while the Magra river flows right on the opposite side and, just a little further away, the sea completes this circle of elements.

From “the Fortress of Sarzanello”, which can be reached through the medieval mule track that starts from Via San Francesco, whilst doing the fortress parapet walk, you‘ll get a panoramic view of the lower Magra valley from “the Apuane Alps” up until the beaches in “Marinella”.

Sarzana is a town worth visiting because of its restoration boutiques, monuments, XVI-XVII century noble residences, churches with their well-kept art treasures, typical streets (carobi) and numerous squares.

The old town walls of Sarzana, commissioned by Lorenzo de Medici in the second half of the fourteenth century, were largely destroyed in 1840. To date of this defensive bulwark the Towers, “the Cittadella” (built where once stood the Pisan fortress named “Firmafede”) and the Sarzanello Fort, erected on a hill (in place of the ancient “Castrum sarzanae”), remain.

The town of Sarzana offers its visitors, besides the welcoming comforts of the B&B “Dentro le Mura” at 33 Bertoloni Street, the magic of its natural environment, the charm of its history, the pleasures of its cuisine plus an historical centre that during the summer turns into a great stage with music performances, painting exhibitions, literary and gastronomic events, traditional shows and antique markets.
